I recently had the opportunity to make a new charcoal mural in Paris. Invited by Jérôme Coumet, mayor of the 13th district in Paris, and counting with the production support of Galerie Mathgoth, I created this piece measuring 140 square meters with a height of 20 meters, which I completed in four days. Usually my charcoal murals are part of the IDENTITY series in which I look for people from the neighbourhood who feel identified with the place where I create the mural. However, the requirements of the district dictated that the local residents reach a consensus to select the image with which they would live.
It was the first time I was asked to present three proposals for the selection of the final piece, to be decided through a popular vote. Because of this I recurred to images of my loved ones and I had the joy of seeing that the chosen image was of my wife, Ana Alvarez-Errecalde, who I love and admire as a life partner, mother of our children and artist.
After so many years of following the development of my work it was a pleasant surprise to find her portrait on a wall of Paris, a city for which she feels a special affection. In her words, “Having been born and raised in Argentina, most of the people who have influenced me culturally, received the shelter of Paris during the darkest days of Argentina’s history: Astor Piazzolla, Julio Cortázar, Mercedes Sosa, María Elena Walsh, Jorge Donn, Antonio Seguí, Atahualpa Yupanki, Juan José Saer, and many more artists and thinkers who have left behind a legacy which transcends all borders and remains substantially transformative, were nourished by the freedom that the city of Paris offered.”

Recientemente tuve la oportunidad de crear un nuevo mural a carboncillo en París. Invitado por Jérôme Coumet, alcalde del distrito 13 de París, y contando con el respaldo de producción de Galerie Mathgoth, realicé esta obra de 140 metros cuadrados a 20 metros de altura, que finalicé en cuatro días. Normalmente los murales que hago en carboncillo son parte de la serie IDENTIDAD, en la que busco personas del barrio que se sientan identificadas con el lugar en el que realizo cada mural. Sin embargo, los requisitos del Distrito 13, dictaminan que los habitantes del barrio deben llegar a un consenso para elegir la imagen con la que convivirán en su entorno cotidiano.
Es la primera vez que me piden presentar tres propuestas para la elección de la obra final llevada a cabo a través de una votación popular. Debido a esto recurrí a imágenes de mis seres queridos y tuve la alegría de ver que la imagen elegida era la de mi esposa, Ana Álvarez-Errecalde, a quien amo y admiro como compañera de vida, madre de nuestros hijos y artista.
Luego de tantos años de seguir el desarrollo de mi obra, encontrar su retrato en un muro de París ha sido todo una sorpresa para ella. París es una ciudad por la que siente un cariño especial. Según sus palabras: “Habiendo nacido y crecido en Argentina, gran parte de las personas que me han influenciado culturalmente recibieron el cobijo de París durante los años más oscuros de la historia Argentina: Astor Piazzolla, Julio Cortázar, Mercedes Sosa, María Elena Walsh, Jorge Donn, Antonio Seguí, Atahualpa Yupanki, Juan José Saer, y muchos otros artistas y pensadores que nos han dejado un legado que sobrepasa cualquier frontera y sigue siendo sustancialmente transformador, se nutrieron de la libertad que París ofrecía”.
